Promoting and Protecting What’s Important: The Birrarung/Yarra River

Locals have spent countless lazy summer days immersed in the river that winds through the picturesque township of Warburton – swimming, floating, fishing, or simply soaking up the natural beauty of the Birrarung/Yarra River. Surrounded by towering mountain ash, lush ferns and an orchestra of birdlife – from graceful cormorants to the tiny superb fairywren – locals know that it’s the perfect way to experience the heart of town.

As more people discover this magical stretch of river, it’s never been more important to care for it. Many already lead the way – like local Trevor Davy, who spends his mornings collecting rubbish with his dog Rosie and untangling fishing lines that can harm our beloved platypus. Community groups do their part too, removing weeds, planting natives, and caring for the whimsical path that winds along the river’s edge.

We can all help by embracing one simple principle: leave no trace. Take everything you bring in, out with you, and dispose of waste properly – no nappies, popped tubes or barbecue waste in the river. Avoid wearing thongs: they’re not a good water shoe and often end up floating off alone and become litter. If local bins are full, please take your rubbish with you rather than leaving your rubbish next to the bin.

Choose durable tubes and avoid glitter-filled ones that shed microplastics that pollute the waterways and are ingested by our wildlife. At Warburton Adventure Co. we’ve invested in high-quality, long-lasting tubes and sleds available to hire for those keen to experience the river safely and sustainably. Contact us to hire.

Together, we can keep the Birrarung flowing clean and clear: a place for people, wildlife and future generations to enjoy.
