We recognise that our business, adventures and impact are intrinsically connected to the natural environment, culture and communities of the upper Yarra Valley.We are a VTIC Quality Tourism Accredited Business and a Sustainable Tourism Accredited Business, recognised for our commitment to responsible tourism practices and awarded for excellence in sustainability.As a Parks Victoria Licensed Tour Operator, we contribute directly to the management of the parks where we operate through annual and per-person licence fees, helping support the protection of these important landscapes. With all tours delivered within 30km of Warburton, we keep our environmental and economic footprint local while creating positive outcomes for the region.
Caring for country and community We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands where we operate and support Indigenous culture, businesses and causes.Work closely with Murrundindi, ngurungaeta (head man) of the region, to embed Indigenous perspectives into all programs.Support Indigenous enterprise through partnerships and by stocking Murrundindi’s locally designed Indigenous-owned clothing brand.Provide opportunities for participants to learn about local history, culture and connection to Country. Minimising our environmental impact We are committed to protecting the natural environments where we operate by applying responsible practices across all aspects of our business.Operate as a place-based tourism business, with all activities located within a 30km radius of Warburton to reduce travel impacts.Embed Leave No Trace principles across tours, programs and guide practices.Use group transport and source vehicles and vehicle supplies locally where possible.Work with land managers, including Parks Victoria and DEECA, to minimise impacts on public land.Reduce waste through recycling, careful catering, food waste minimisation and responsible equipment management.Purchase durable, high-quality products designed to last longer and reuse, repurpose or recycle equipment at end of life.Use portable toilets at remote campsites where required to reduce impacts on sensitive environments. Supporting a local and ethical economy We believe tourism should strengthen the local economy by creating jobs, supporting local suppliers and building regional partnerships.Employ predominantly local staff and contractors, creating employment opportunities within the Upper Yarra.Reinvest the majority of program expenditure locally through wages, accommodation, catering, transport and suppliers.Prioritise Australian and local suppliers, including local producers, caterers, coffee roasters, orchards and outdoor equipment manufacturers.Develop collaborative visitor experiences with local businesses and events.Purchase supplies in larger quantities from Victorian suppliers where possible to reduce delivery frequency and associated emissions.Select quality products that are durable and designed to minimise replacement and waste.Donate safe, expired first aid equipment to rural communities in Timor-Leste. Protecting the future of the Upper Yarra WAC is committed to contributing to the long-term resilience, sustainability and prosperity of the Upper Yarra region.Owners Liesel and Sam Maddock participate in Upper Yarra innovation and economic development initiatives, including the Eco-tourism Walking Economy – Innovation Working Group.Warburton Adventure Co. is a member of the Warburton Valley Community Economic Development Association, collaborating with local businesses and regional leaders to support a thriving and resilient local economy.Liesel is a member of the Upper Yarra River Reserves Committee of Management, supporting the stewardship and protection of the Birrarung (Yarra River) corridor.Through our outdoor education programs, we encourage future generations to build a connection with the natural environment and develop an appreciation for the landscapes of the upper Yarra Valley.Our Minimal Impact Plan outlines our ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impacts, improving our operations and protecting the natural and cultural values of the region for future generations.
